$For the Love of Money (or Love?)$

I know this is a very cliched title,  but so are many other things in this life. Money, Power and Sex drives us all to the edge of the earth in search of the one that matters most to us. Many people– mostly idealists and the hopelessly romantic– believe that the world has just recently become a place where love does not necessarily outweigh monetary value. But our priorities have not changed very much from those of our ancestors. Great empires were forged and sustained not on love alone, but on something that could be physically held onto and respected. And, yes, I am implying that money demands more respect than something as abstract and flimsy as love.

And by love, I do not mean the kind  required by most of us through various religious beliefs, but the kind we whisper about as children and cry over as teenagers. The kind that makes our palms sweat and our bodies convulse with pleasure. Just in describing its characteristics, I wonder about love’s true purpose. I mean, what is it all for but physical pleasure, something gained so haphazardly in all of its vagueness and obscurity. Money, on the other hand, seems to be a more definite goal to chase. With it, all other things, be it love, comfort, even power and fame could be bought: Prada and Gucci aren’t the only things on sale in the free world. And though bought “values” may not be as authentic as those taught to us in our grandmothers kitchen, I can bet that for a good enough price I could get close enough.
